Monday Melee on St. Patrick’s Day 2008

Published by linda at 8:56 am under personal

In honor of St Patrick’s day, a little melee fun…

1. The Magnificent: Name someone you absolutely adore, and tell us why.
Leprechauns. I adore leprechauns. They are small, cheerful, cheeky and they know where the pot of gold is. I think I would like to be a leprechaun.  I, myself, am small, cheerful, and cheeky.  Now I just need to find the pot of gold and I, too, can wear shoes with funny buckles. Wait. Are there girl leprechauns?

2. The Muddy: Tell us something about life you just don’t “get”.
Green beer. Ick. I don’t like beer when it’s not green. Turning it green doesn’t make it better.

3. The Magnetic: Name something or someone good (or bad) you’re drawn to and you just can’t help it. Tell us if you want to change this or not.
Four leaf clovers.  Indeed!  Lucky little things and they look a lot like shamrocks.

4. The Mainstay: Who or what is something you just can’t live without? Why?
Irish Coffee.  Okay, well, any coffee.  But today an Irish Coffee would be fun. The real thing consists of hot coffee, Irish whiskey and sugar, stirred, then with thick cream floated on top. The coffee is drunk through the cream. The original recipe explicitly uses cream that has not been whipped.

5. The Masquerade: Tell us something about yourself we wouldn’t already know.
I’m a trivia nut.  Like, did you know that St. Patrick’s “banishing of the snakes”  was a metaphor?  There never have been any snakes in Ireland.  The banishing of the snakes is really a metaphor for the banishing of pagan beliefs. Sounds a lot better to say “St. Patrick banished the snakes” than to say he banished the non-Christians, hmm?

6. The Mettle: Tell us about a time you showed courage in yourself, or tell us what you wish you had the courage to do.
I once tried green eggs and ham. Indeed I did, Sam I Am.  It was a much better option than green beer. I would eat them in a house, and I would eat them with a mouse. I would eat them here or there. Green eggs taste better than green beer!

Happy St. Patrick’s Day!

LOL on the list. I haven’t even done one yet and thanks to Norwalk Virus at the hospital where dd is… my weekend was a strange one.

    *Sigh*

OMG, sorry to hear Norwalk is at the hospital. Again. Seems there’s a greater chance of getting really nasty viruses at a hospital than there is at home. They *really* should let you run the department that governs sanitation. Even the wee-est bugs don’t stand a chance in your house. This I know!

Glad you liked my little green day list. lol.

Tried calling the other day, but you’d left already. Hope it’s getting saner there.

    Up.

Well one of the surefire ways to pass it around is improper handwashing… which when you think about it is gross. A virus that lives in bodily fluids is passed to others when people don’t wash properly therefore giving their germy, bodily fluid/virus laden ick to someone else… who then transports *that* into their own body via mouth or eyes, etc.

I don’t know if my penchant for a clean house would make a difference that way.

I so get mad at people who don’t avail themselves of all the antiseptic gel stations that are posted like, every ten feet at the hospitals. You’d think they’d care.

    $#%!@

The worst part of it for her is being quarantined in her room for days. (4-5 to be exact) and not being able to smoke.

Me being a non-smoker… I don’t feel all that bad about it, but I suppose it is a misery for a smoker.

I’ve read that antiseptic gel actually just creates hardier germs and that good old soap and warm water is the best solution. Not sure if that’s true. But yeah — don’t get me started on hand washing. I could rant on about the people who prepare food and take washroom breaks and don’t wash their hands.

Ouch on the quarantine - that’s got to be hard on her.

So - what happens if someone does get the Norwalk virus? I’ve heard much about it running rampant in hospitals, but have no idea what it actually does.

At home, proper washing with soap and water is sufficient. At the hospital, they have antiseptic gel stations everywhere so you’re supposed to clean before and after visiting, etc. etc. to help cut down spread of anything. People ignore the stations because they’re idiots.

Norwalk is a really bad gastroenteritis (hope I spelled right, since I didn’t check) or what some call stomach flu… though flu means respiratory and this isn’t that. It’s nausea, stomach pain, fever, vomiting and the rear-end vomiting as well. LOL. It all happens all at once. YAY! It affects people to differing levels, and as usual… is worse on the young, the old and those with compromised immunse systems.
