Christmas Trivia of a different sort…

Published by linda at 6:10 pm under opinion

Did you know?

… 2.65 billion cards are sold in the United States alone during the holiday season. This is enough to fill an entire football field 10 stories high.. or circle the planet 10 times.

… The credit card debt generated around the holidays is not paid off until the following July, and 25% of American consumers say it takes them until October to pay off the Christmas debt.

… About 20,000 personal bankrupcies are declared in the first 3 months of a new year. A third of them are because of Christmas shopping.

… If every household in America would keep and reuse just 2 feet of ribbon every year, it would save 38,000 miles of ribbon. That’s just enough ribbon to tie a bow around planet Earth.

No. I am not a grinch. I just don’t think of “Christmas” and “pollute the earth with plastic and go into debt for 10 months” as things that ought to go hand in hand.

I believe in making at least some of my gifts by hand. With love.  And spending time with family instead of at the mall. Because, by this age, I have learned that the only commodity I can’t “get more of” is time. Money I can earn more of. Time I can’t. I’d rather give that. It’s far more precious to me. Anyone that doesn’t understand that doesn’t understand me.

That’s my turn. Feel welcome to share your thoughts going into the week before Christmas. :)

We used to make every Christmas gift. A few trips from Santa’s workshop to the emergency room changed that for me.

    lol. Ouch, Rotus.

I love making gifts. From dollhouses to dolls to clothing and sweaters, etc. You name it, I can probably make it (or probably have) lol. No trips to emergency yet, knock on wood.

I will never understand the shopping antics of a lot of people at Christmas. I refuse to participate even when I do have money. I make simple things or give a card owing them some sort of service, like babysitting or cleaning their house or something. And the kids on my list also get simple meaningful things. I’ve made scarves and dolls and such too, but something tells me they probably didn’t turn out quite as nice as yours Linda… lol

I’m one of those weird women who hate to shop. And I do save ribbon and bows and paper when I can.
