I was right - blogger.com no longer allows comments without Google id

Published by linda at 2:16 pm under blogging

Just in case you don’t get into all the comment threads, I’d griped posted that I couldn’t comment on a blogger.com blog unless I signed in with a Google id. A few people let me know that’s a user option.

Apparently, it USED TO be a user option. Not anymore. Read this post from Suburban Oblivion….  she shows a screen cap, too.  So, if you’re on blogger.com and wonder why your comments dropped off… that’s why.

Well (insert many and varied swear words here)!

I see it’s an extremely recent change they’ve made and what with me being too busy for pants ooooor my own blog, I hadn’t noticed it yet.

Thanks for getting to the root of it Linda. Suburban Oblivion suggested people complain. I agree. What a bonehead move on their part. Those who have blogger sites because they do the pay to blog thing, or want to have adsense on their blogs, or blogrush and stuff like that, will reaaaaally be ticked because they can’t just move over to WordPress to teach Blogger a lesson… WordPress doesn’t allow those things.

Bah.. blogger. Bad. If they were a dog, this would be where I’d be rolling up a newspaper and whacking them on their proverbial nose for making an accident all over their users.

    ;-)

LOL. That they did. Pee’d on their users, for sure.
    They should watch Austin Powers.
Plots to take over the world always fail.

Personally, I’d love to see more blogger.com bloggers go sign up with a low cost host… the one I use has a $6/month package that kicks butt (and doesn’t go down as often as a pole dancer, like some cheap hosts do) Host their own blog… import the content… and kiss blogspot goodbye. Then they make the rules. lol.

Hey, I’m compiling a list of bloggers who’ve written about this…hope you don’t mind if I include a link to you in my post today…(lemme know).

    Robin… I love your blog!

I know, hey Frac? Me, too. I friended her so I could go back to devour, trackback and comment. lol. Now THAT is what FMB is all about. : )

I came here via Robin’s link.

Blogger has taken one step too many this time. I’m so glad I left them when I did.

But - to get by their nasty ways, I’ve been leaving a href link back to my blog. It’s a pain, but I only type it once and then copy and paste wherever I go. I will not succumb to their evil ways.

Linda, I looked for a fmb widget on her blog and didn’t see one. I searched fmb for “Pensieve” and for “Robin” and still didn’t get a listing. How did you find a fmb listing for her and what the heck is it? I was going to add her to my fuelroll but instead ended up putting her on the old-fashioned blogroll.

  8. […] Just posting to let you know I tried to post a comment on your blog, but I can’t — because comments aren’t allowed unless one has a blogger/google id to log in with.  Here’s a post about it, just for info; http://atlindas.com/2007/11/i-was-right-bloggercom-no-longer-allows-comments-without-google-id/ […]

Well this is disappointing news indeed! I guess i could switch to another site as i’m pretty new to this world so it would be ok you think? Any recommendations?

Breaking news: Blogger has implemented OpenID backtracking. Your comment links are back. Google/Blogger has kind of, sort of apologized and explained that it was all a big misunderstanding. It’s on the Blogger homepage.

They probably realized that they would lose a lot of accounts I’m sure.

  12. lindaon 14 Dec 2007 at 11:48 am

Except that even though I can comment on blogger blogs now, I can’t include my url. The url is only included if I log in with a Google or Blogger id. The rest of us folks get no linkback. I think that will still hugely impact people’s commenting.

    Shane - what I’d suggest is…

Best option: Go to hostgator.com. $6/month for the baby alligator account. Then one button install for self hosted wordpress. Best choice, hands down, because you can add widgets as you like. SEO widgets, comment widgets, etc.

Second best option: wordpress.com. But you can’t add commercial content. no adsense, no paid stuff, etc.

If you can swing a few bucks a month for the little hosting account - I’d say do it that way. And if you need any help, come ask! Been there, done that. Left blogger.com long ago when they lost some of my archives a couple of years ago.

Thanks I am going to definitely look into it and consider switching as i think i’ll continue on with this whole blogging thing.

  14. lindaon 14 Dec 2007 at 12:00 pm

Btw… if you do switch, don’t shut down your blogger account. You can forward it to the new one so that you don’t lose traffic from anyone that’s bookmarked you.

    :)

I have a bunch of questions after checking it out could you email me @ sghuste@gmail.com so I don’t have to show everyone how dumb I am Ha Ha!

  16. lindaon 14 Dec 2007 at 12:34 pm
